The project is a 1300 seat music auditorium located below ground with music rooms and classrooms. The auditorium will adjoin existing heritage buildings on the Canberra Grammar School campus around the main quadrangle. Included in the new complex is a modern library, a formal entry foyer and a new assembly and concert hall.
The CGS Auditorium and Centre for Music provides the School, and wider Canberra community, a world-class learning facility, concert hall and performing arts venue within the heart of one of Canberra’s most prestigious educational institutions.
Architecturally, the design presented a number of complex fire engineering challenges to interconnect the existing Breezeway and forecourt to the School’s heritage Quadrangle. Much of the auditorium is subterranean, which necessitated detailed fire brigade intervention consideration and complex evacuation analysis.
Lit Consulting are engaged to provide fire safety engineering services for the project including developing the fire safety strategy for fire and smoke compartmentation, smoke hazard management, evacuation strategy and integration with the existing buildings.
